amphibious housing/

third year (University of Montréal)

period: one semester

supervisor: Pierre Boyer-Mercier

project site : Montréal, Canada

This project takes place in the east of Montreal city, along the Saint-Laurent. Thanks to the creation of  canals, we had the opportunity to bring the water in  the plot. Thus, we had to design seven housing, including three different typologies: two lofts, three houses with two bedrooms and a house of three bedrooms. Each project faces an another one, together we had to think the public space between both propositions of housing: the woonerf.

I choose to bring the water of the canals in my plots. This choice allowed me to blur the limits of each rectangular plot. The floor plan is composed of three small islands connected with thin corridors opened to the canal. This fragmented plan is unified thanks to the roof. The main idea was to use water like a vector of privacy and an indirect source of light. Bedrooms have a favoured link with water. The main bedroom is slightly buried in the water. The second bedroom, on the first floor, includes a terrace with a view on the canal.

The project in front of mine was also using water into plots. We decided to extend canals and bring water inside the public space. This choice allows to constrain car's circulation and favored social interactions.
